Christmas at Castle in the Clouds

Every year, the Castle in the Clouds, located in Moultonborough, NH hosts a fundraising event called “Christmas at the Castle”.

Each year local businesses are selected to decorate a room inside the castle based on a pre-selected Christmas theme. This year’s theme was Christmas Carols. Each decorator chose a song that they would center their room around— I chose “White Christmas”.

This year I was assigned to decorate the smallest and most modest room in the castle— the Maid's Quarters.

As I walked through my staging warehouse, I selected decor that was white or had muted colors to dress up the room. Local woodland animals such as deer, birds, raccoons, squirrels and owls were placed around the room to bring it to life.

Unfortunately, we were not allowed to hang art on the walls, so I leaned framed art on the desk and an arch next to the tree by the window.

With the carol in mind, I brought a few lines to fruition in the room. For the lyric that read, “Children listen for sleigh bells in the snow”, I placed sleigh bells on the bed with the book for Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” next to it.

Inspired by the lyric, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas with every Christmas card I write”, I staged the desk with hand written cards painted by local artists.

With the room being the Maid’s Quarters, I tried to keep it modest yet make it memorable.

To set the room apart from others, I hid a speaker in the room with the actual “White Christmas” song on repeat for viewers to hear as they toured the castle.
